Mine Facility Expansion, New Mexico

Project Overview

Meridian delivered a complex mine-facility expansion in an active operating environment where space, sequencing, safety, and coordination were critical to execution. The work required substantial concrete construction, underground infrastructure, and supporting civil scopes within a highly constrained footprint shared by multiple contractors and ongoing mine operations.

The Problem / Challenge

Field conditions required the team to continually adapt the plan without losing control of safety, quality, or schedule. Undocumented underground utilities required extensive potholing and verification before excavation could advance, while work was performed under MSHA requirements and routine compliance inspections. Meridian’s field leadership, self-performing crews, and equipment allowed the team to respond directly as conditions changed and keep critical scopes moving.

Meridian's Approach

Meridian self-performed all concrete work, placing approximately 2,800 cubic yards of concrete and 500,000 pounds of rebar with no subcontractors. Six-day work weeks and a crew rotation system kept production moving for roughly 80% of the project.

Slurry walls replaced conventional open excavation, eliminating access conflicts in the constrained footprint. Two superintendents managed separate work areas, supported by a project engineer and a dedicated safety manager.

When the concrete failure occurred, Meridian notified the client the same day. That transparency defined the relationship for the rest of the project.

Outcome

The project was delivered within the client's required window. Meridian and the mechanical contractor completed the full scope with zero safety incidents across the project duration. MSHA conducted multiple unannounced inspections over the course of roughly two and a half years on site. Meridian received zero citations. The client's project manager expressed satisfaction with the outcome, and the relationship continued after project closeout.

The Right Contractor Makes All the Difference

Meridian brings self-performing crews, in-house materials, and a track record of repeat work to every project.
