Wister Lake Conduit Seals: Specialty Project

The Wister Lake Conduit Seals was awarded to Meridian Engineering based on a firm, fixed price. This specialty project was given to us by the Army Corps of Engineers to replace the joint seals in the 12ft diameter drainage conduits for their dam. This demand was sparked due to the wear of the existing seals, which allowed groundwater to infiltrate the conduits, potentially undermining the dam operations.

This project required a strategic, meticulously executed approach as access to the conduits could only be achieved by lowering materials and personnel to the outlet works. The conduits were stored in a confined space and required Lock-Out-Tag-Out measures since the discharge gates were sealed to allow for construction. To satisfy the scope of the project, Meridian developed a robust Health & Safety Plan that addressed the EM-385 requirements for USACE with the addition of epoxy injections and stainless steel cover plates. Despite varying shapes of the conduits contributing to new-found challenges when it came time to install the seals and subsequent stainless steel cover plates, the joints were completed in a timely manner and the conduits were remedied and equipped to discharge lake water in the case of a weather event.
